For while many of the world’s media will be following the likes of Retief Goosen, Sergio Garcia and Adam Scott as they take on the 7,388-yard challenge of one of the longest courses on the PGA European Tour, Gulf Times will be there as both reporter and sponsor after giving the event its corporate backing.
“We are delighted to be associated with the Commercialbank Qatar Masters, Presented by Dolphin Energy, which continues to go from strength to strength and has quickly become an established part of the European Tour,” said Gulf Times’ Managing Editor Neil Cook.
“In 2008, Gulf Times celebrates its 30th anniversary and our support of Qatar's premier golfing event underlines our continued commitment to the growth of sport in this dynamic country. During the event, Qatar's leading English language daily will guarantee unparalleled coverage during Masters week and is proud to be part of such a prestigious tournament.”
The support of Gulf Times is typical of the way the Qatari business community has backed a $2.5 million event, which has firmly established itself as one of the premier overseas dates on the Tour calendar.
Held in association by Commercialbank, the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) and the Qatar Golf Association, the tournament is now the richest in its history in terms of prize-money and has attracted a bevy of world-class celebrities eager to see both the tournament and the booming city of Doha.
Brand new purpose-built hospitality units have been put in place beside the 18th green, a new world-class exhibition area sponsored by De Boer will showcase sponsors and exhibitors, while stunning visuals have been placed around the clubhouse, course and hospitality suites to add extra dynamism to the TV pictures that will broadcast the tournament to a global audience of hundreds of millions.
Play gets underway on Thursday and Friday (Jan 24 and 25) at 6.50am, while the final two days will see the action unfold from 7.30am before the champion receives the prestigious Mother of Pearl trophy around 4.45pm on Sunday evening (Jan 27).
