Seriously considered quitting tournament play and taking up another 'golf-related' career until winning Alfred Dunhill SA PGA in February 1998, beating Ernie Els by two strokes. Struggled again in 1999 and contemplated a change of direction after the TNT Dutch Open.
He says; "I thought about becoming a window cleaner on very tall buildings!" Turned to coach Simon Holmes and eye specialist, Dr Ken West, to help with his putting - the one element in his game which was holding him back.
Things came together in the 2001 Qatar Masters, when he had a career-best 101 putts (a month after telling his wife he was quitting) to take the title from Robert Karlsson. Grew up in Zimbabwe with Nick Price, Mark McNulty and Denis Watson. Lost play-off for 1981 Swiss Open but has since chalked up five European Tour wins. Noted short-game genius and topped AXA Performance Data Sand Saves category in 1998, 1999 and 2000.
